CASE STUDY : INTEGRATED MOTION FOR THE MODERN DAY MACHINE MANUFACTURER

Challenge:

We were approached by the UK division of a European packaging machine manufacturer to provide the control system design for the multi-axis end of line packaging machine.

With the remit to take the control system from concept to operational system we set about sourcing a suitable solution to support the customers requirement.

Action:

Working with one of our preferred partners – Rockwell Automation – we designed a control system incorporating a range of their products.

With key aspects of the design including full machine control and fault diagnosis via HMI, split-zone machine safety with safe speed access and multi-axis motion control – all fully integrated via an Ethernet network.

Full panel build, installation and commission undertaken by our team of skilled engineers – with full electrical drawings and detailed controls system operating manual provided.

Result:

A turnkey project delivered on-time with improvement in planned machine cycle time.

CASE STUDY: 24/7 PLANT MAINTENANCE SUPPORT VIA REMOTE ACCESS

Westermo

Challenge:

A geographically challenged End User Production Facility for whom we had successfully undertaken a range of turnkey projects for, approached us with a view to providing 24/7 maintenance and breakdown support for their plant.

Action:

Due to the geographical location of the facility the standard response time for our engineers to arrive on-site didn’t match the production needs of the plant; we therefore implemented the following strategy:

  • Plant wide audit to identify critical machine on-site
  • Ethernet architecture installed throughout critical machines
  • Remote access gateway installed on-site
  • Training undertaken with on-site maintenance staff to increase skill level
Result:

As a result of the training put in place, the facility Maintenance staffs are now resolving 90% of breakdowns ‘first time’. With the remaining issues being addressed in the first instance via the Westermo remote access gateway.

CASE STUDY: FUNCTIONAL SAFETY FOR THE END USER PLANT

Challenge:

A Blue Chip organisation required a turnkey safety solution for the output section of their production line.

A key stipulation of the safety system was the requirement for safe speed access without compromising machine throughput..

Action:

After a site survey to determine the current system restraints and the key legislative changes required, we engaged the assistance of Rockwell Automation to ensure the safety system we designed was at the cutting edge of machine functionality as well as satisfying current machine legislation.

With full mechanical, electrical, control build and install undertaken the final design incorporated light curtains, safe speed monitoring relays and Safety PLC.

Result:

Project completed on-time, delivering a full functional safety system with no compromise to production line throughput.
